Match Report

A Colin McMenamin double either side of a Sean Higgins strike gave Dundee the points in an impressive performance.

The striker raced on to a through ball from Andrew Shinnie to fire past Craig Samson for the opening goal.

Higgins put Dundee two ahead with a blistering free-kick from 22 yards midway through the opening period.

McMenamin completed his double with a looping header which beat Samson at his far post, keeping Dundee's promotion hopes alive and adding to Ayr's woes.

Playing a 3-5-2 formation, Dundee were never troubled at the back where Jim Lauchlan in a sweeper role was authoritative and unflustered.

In midfield, Harkins worked tirelessly until a dead leg saw him leave the field to a standing ovation minutes into the restart, while Shinnie gave an impressive performance on the right side of midfield.

Without a failure in the side, Dundee pressed the ball constantly on the odd occasions when Ayr were in possession and played with a desire and commitment which the visitors could not match.

Ayr keeper Samson made good stops from Shinnie and Harkins while up front his side's strikers never troubled Dundee keeper Tony Bullock.
