Match Report
Two goals in five minutes from skipper Chris Aitken and Alex Williams just before the break steered Ayr into the second round.
Third Division Berwick shocked Ayr by taking the lead after 12 minutes with David Greenhill's raking 25-yard shot.
Ayr were stunned but hit back in the 40th-minute when Aitken fooled keeper Ryan McGurk with a long-range effort.
Ayr edged in front right on the stroke of half-time through Williams which was enough in the end to ensure victory.
